Spraying hydroseed

How to Care for Your Newly Hydroseeded Lawn

Getting your lawn hydroseeded is a great first step — now the real work begins. Proper watering and care in the first few weeks makes the difference between a patchy, uneven lawn and one that comes in thick, green, and healthy. Here's everything you need to know.

Watering Schedule by Phase

  • Wait 24 hours before you begin watering after initial hydroseeding

  • Do not walk on or disturb the mulch layer

  • Water early morning and again mid-afternoon, well before sundown

  • Avoid watering late in the day (fungal risk)

  • Consistency is critical — skipping days can stall germination

  • 2–3x daily; keep surface consistently moist

  • Reduce frequency as grass establishes

  • 1–2x deeply per day to encourage deep roots

Mowing and Fertilizing

  • Mow when grass blades reach 2"–3" high

  • Don't mow too early — let roots anchor first

  • After first mowing: apply a strong balanced fertilizer

  • 30 days later: apply again

  • Use starter fertilizer on fresh-cut, dry lawn, then water thoroughly
