How to Care for Your Newly Hydroseeded Lawn
Getting your lawn hydroseeded is a great first step — now the real work begins. Proper watering and care in the first few weeks makes the difference between a patchy, uneven lawn and one that comes in thick, green, and healthy. Here's everything you need to know.
Watering Schedule by Phase
Wait 24 hours before you begin watering after initial hydroseeding
Do not walk on or disturb the mulch layer
Water early morning and again mid-afternoon, well before sundown
Avoid watering late in the day (fungal risk)
Consistency is critical — skipping days can stall germination
-
2–3x daily; keep surface consistently moist
-
Reduce frequency as grass establishes
-
1–2x deeply per day to encourage deep roots
Mowing and Fertilizing
Mow when grass blades reach 2"–3" high
Don't mow too early — let roots anchor first
After first mowing: apply a strong balanced fertilizer
30 days later: apply again
Use starter fertilizer on fresh-cut, dry lawn, then water thoroughly
